How To Afford Your Next Family Vacation: 20 Easy Tips

Ever feel confused and worried about how to afford your next family vacation—or how to afford travel with kids without financial strain? This post offers 20 actionable tips to help you save smartly for that much-needed break.

From budgeting hacks to savvy travel fund strategies, our family has used the majority of these tips to save up for our vacations, both overseas and closer to home.

So, let’s get started on planning a trip that’s both enriching for the family and kind to your wallet.

How To Afford Your Next Family Vacation

1. Clarify What You Can Afford to Save Using a Household Budget

First things first, let’s talk numbers. Grab a pen and paper, or better yet, a budgeting spreadsheet. List down all your monthly expenses—everything from groceries to Netflix.

Now, subtract that from your income. What’s left? That’s your “fun money.”

Step 1: Identify monthly expenses

Step 2: Subtract from income

Step 3: Allocate a portion to travel

Pick a travel budget that still lets you meet other financial goals and maintain an emergency fund, and then stick to it my friend! This is what turns your beach holiday daydreams into achievable plans.

This scene underscores the importance of choosing a travel budget that balances other financial goals and maintains an emergency fund, turning vacation dreams into achievable plans.

2. Start a Travel Fund

Alright, you’ve got your travel savings allocated. Now, let’s make it grow. Open a separate account just for travel. It’s so much easier to keep track of your hard earned savings that way.

Automate a fixed sum into this account every payday. Make it a non-negotiable line item in your budget. This way, you’re not scrambling for funds when vacation time rolls around. Your future sun-kissed, beach-lounging (when-not-handing-out-snacks) self will thank you.

3. Lower Your Everyday Expenses

So you’re keen to jet-set with the kiddo’s more often? Time to trim the fat from your daily spending. And it’s okay, we’re talking sensible cuts, not a frugal lifestyle overhaul.

Consider small changes like making your coffee at home or opting for a cheaper gym. These little tweaks can really free up cash for your travel fund.

Remember, the goal isn’t to live like a hermit. It’s about making room for more adventures without feeling the pinch. Small changes can lead to big trips.

4. Establish a Family Travel Budget and Stick to It!

So you’ve got that travel fund growing and ready to spend, but how do you make that fund last once you’re actually there? Learning how to budget for a family vacation is crucial. Consider your travel budget as your financial GPS. Don’t leave home without it.

First, figure out the total amount you can comfortably spend. Then, break it down into daily or weekly chunks. This keeps you from accidentally splurging on day one.

Use an app or good ol’ pen and paper to track spending during the trip. Pre-plan expenses like meals, activities, and souvenirs. This way, the only surprise you’ll have is how smooth the trip goes.

5. Don’t Forget to Add Monthly Expenses into Your Travel Budget

This is one of my favourite tricks: you know those recurring home expenses? They can be your family holiday budget’s secret weapon. Think about it. You won’t be buying groceries or filling up the car when you’re sipping cocktails on a beach.

Take those usual weekly costs like food and fuel, and redirect them into your travel budget. It’s like finding loose coins under the sofa cushions, but better.

This gives your travel fund an unexpected boost right at the last minute, making your trip even more enjoyable without straining the wallet.

6. Use Cheap Flights to Determine Your Destination

Who says you need a destination before booking a flight? Flip the script. Let budget-friendly flights guide your next adventure. It’s like letting the universe decide, but cheaper.

Start by scouring sites like Google Flights or Skyscanner for deals in the next 3-6 months. Keep an eye on individual airline specials too. Have your travel fund looking healthy and ready to pounce for when the price is right.

By being flexible with your destination, you not only save money but also open the door to places you might not have considered. It’s a win-win.

7. Book Flights and Accommodation Early

You’ve heard the saying, “The early bird catches the worm.” Well, in travel terms, that worm is a pile of savings. Booking your vacation early can be a game-changer for your budget.

Hotels and flights are generally cheaper the earlier you book. It’s simple supply and demand.

So, mark your calendar and set reminders. Being an early planner not only saves you money and gives you the best pick of accommodations and flight times, it also eases financial pressures as you have more time to save up for your trip.

This image underscores the benefits of early planning, which secures lower prices and better choices due to supply and demand, easing financial pressures by allowing more time to save.

8. Use Points and Miles for Flights

Let’s talk about the magic of points and miles. Travel credit cards can be your ticket to almost-free flights. But here’s the one and only rule: only play the points game if you can pay off the card each month. No one wants to pay interest or have a debt hangover.

Our family is living proof of utilising points and miles to save money on our travels. We recently paid only AU $344 for six flights from Australia to Europe, all thanks to points and miles. It’s been a game-changer for our travel budgets.

So, if you’re disciplined with using credit, this strategy can turn your everyday spending into your next great escape.

9. Travel Carry-On Only

If you’re travelling on budget airlines regularly, one of the easiest ways to save is by travelling with just a carry-on. Depending on the style of trip, it can be doable, even with kids in tow.

Many budget airlines charge for checked bags, so going carry-on only can save you a pretty penny, and it makes airport navigation a breeze. No one likes managing kids at the baggage carousel after a 12 hour flight am-I-right?!

Okay so this isn’t going to work if you’re going on a ski trip and need all the winter gear, but try and get savvy with your packing when you can. Choose versatile clothing and mini toiletries. Your wallet (and your back) will thank you.

10. Be Flexible with Travel Dates and Departure Times

Flexibility is your best friend when it comes to cheaper flights. A single day can make a huge difference in ticket prices.

In our experience there is no ‘cheap’ day to book or fly. We always use a 7-day outlook when booking. You’d be surprised how much you can save simply by taking a flight a couple of days outside of your original plans.

And about those departure times—sometimes the red-eye flights are the real budget heroes. So, if you and the kids can handle a night flight, your bank account will show its gratitude.

11. Travel in the Shoulder or Low Seasons

Shoulder seasons are our favourite time to travel. It’s that sweet spot between peak and off-peak travel times. And it’s a family traveller’s dream.

You’ll find better prices on flights and accommodations. Fewer crowds mean a more authentic experience, and the weather is still comfortable enough to get around.

So, do a bit of research on your chosen destination’s shoulder or low seasons and see if it can work for your family.  I think you’ll be surprised how much you love it.

This image illustrates how to afford your next family vacation by traveling during shoulder or low seasons, benefiting from lower prices, fewer crowds, and enjoyable weather, making it an ideal strategy for family travel.

12. Try Emerging Destinations

Tired of tourist traps, inflated prices, and lining up for hours? Consider emerging destinations instead. These are the spots not yet overrun by the travel masses.

You’ll likely find fairer prices, a more adventurous experience and, let’s be honest, the locals will actually be happy to see you. Instead of the crowded beach town, what’s one or two towns over that you can explore?

And don’t forget to zig when others zag. If everyone’s going north for the winter, why not head south? Depending on your hemisphere, of course. It’s all about thinking outside the travel box.

13. Try a Staycation

Who says you need to cross borders for a memorable holiday? A staycation can be just as refreshing, and guess what? No flight or fuel costs.

Book a local hotel or Airbnb and play tourist in your own city. You’d be amazed at what you’ve been overlooking.

A staycation offers a fresh perspective on familiar surroundings. Plus, it’s a great way to support local businesses.

This image highlights the joys of a staycation, demonstrating that memorable holidays don’t require distant travel, and showcases how local hotels or Airbnb stays can offer refreshing new perspectives and support local businesses.

14. Opt for Nature – It Usually Wins in Price

Fancy hotels are nice and all, but nature generally comes with a smaller price tag. Consider a camping holiday or a hiking trip for your next family adventure.

Camping slashes accommodation costs, and hiking? Well, that’s practically free entertainment.

The financial benefits are clear, but don’t overlook the added perk: quality outdoor time for the whole family. It’s a win on multiple fronts.

15. Travel with Another Family

Two families, one trip—a really great travel savings strategy. Consider teaming up with another family or your extended family for your next getaway.

Sharing a house on Airbnb can significantly cut accommodation costs. If you’re road-tripping, pooling together in a large car reduces fuel expenses.

So, reach out to friends or family who share your travel vibe. It’s a fun way to make memories while being kind to your wallet.

This approach, where families share accommodations like an Airbnb or pool resources for transportation, can significantly reduce costs, making the vacation more enjoyable and economically friendly.

16. Don’t Rent More Than You Need

Bigger isn’t always better—especially when it comes to rentals. Whether it’s a house or a car, only rent what your family genuinely needs.

A sprawling Airbnb might look tempting, but a cozy cottage could serve you just as well. The same goes for cars; skip the SUV if a more compact, economical car will do.

By being mindful of your actual needs, you can divert those extra funds to more enjoyable parts of your trip.

17. Utilise a Hotel with Free Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s even better when it’s free. Hotels with complimentary breakfasts are a travelling family’s best friend.

This perk takes one meal out of your daily expenses, especially where kids are involved. Plus, you can grab some fruit or pastries to snack on later (did I really just admit that?!)

So, when you’re scrolling through hotel options, filter for those offering free breakfast. Check that it’s actually a good deal and if it is, it’s a simple way to stretch your travel budget.

This amenity removes one meal from your daily expenses and provides extra snacks for later, making it a cost-effective choice for families and stretching the travel budget further.

18. Don’t Eat Out for Every Meal

Eating out is a treat, but doing it for every meal with kids can gobble up your budget real quick.

Opt for self-contained accommodation where you can cook your own meals. Hit up local markets for fresh produce and quick snacks to avoid the cafe stop.

Then, splurge on meals at places you’ve actually been looking forward to trying. This way, you get the best of both worlds: a taste of local culture without a side of budget stress.

19. Take Advantage of Having Young Kids

Yes! Little ones can actually be big savers when it comes to travel. Many places offer kids-eat-free deals and discounted or free entry to attractions.

For example, we took a private helicopter tour onto a glacier in New Zealand. Andie was 1-year-old and therefore flew for free, and the other two girls got hefty discounts for being under a certain age. A competing company we were also looking into was going to charge us full price for all five seats.

Also, don’t overlook public transport. Many cities offer free rides for kids with a paying adult. So, always check age-related discounts; they can make a substantial difference to your travel budget.

This image highlights how families can save through age-related discounts like free flights for toddlers and reduced rates for young children, significantly lowering the overall cost of unique experiences like helicopter tours.

20. Don’t Do ALL the Things

The temptation to do every tour and visit every attraction is real. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to do it all.

Instead, be selective. Choose one or two must-do activities and then embrace the simpler joys. People-watch at a park while the kids frolic, or wander the city streets soaking in the local vibe.

Free attractions are often just as enriching as pricey ones. By being choosy, you’ll not only save money but also enjoy a more relaxed, authentic experience.

BONUS TIP: Prioritise Where You Spend Your Money

Every trip has its highlights. Identify yours beforehand and allocate your budget accordingly.

If theme parks are your jam, maybe splurge less on accommodation. You’ll hardly be there anyway. Dreaming of a beachfront stay? Invest in your accommodation and cook at home to save money on meals.

By prioritising, you ensure that your money goes where it matters most to you. This way, you get the most bang for your buck without compromising on what you love.
